Iron Goat Pub & Grill

Finding great pub fare in Canmore isn’t too hard. Neither is finding a great place to sit in the sunshine and fritter away an afternoon drinking ice-cold beer. But finding them both in one place…well, that’s a bit trickier. Unless you know the way to the Iron Goat.

Iron Goat’s Chef Mike has done great things with the restaurant’s menu, and such signature items as the Game Burger, Carmen Creek Bison Fajitas, Beer Braised Lamb Shank and Alberta Game Meatloaf are renowned throughout the Bow Valley and beyond. (For a peek at the full menu: Iron Goat)

But come summertime, what draws people to the Iron Goat most of all is its patio. I asked General Manager Dan O’Leary what makes the Iron Goat’s patio so great. “It sits much higher than most and has unobstructed views of the valley and the surrounding mountains. As our patio is south facing, the sun shines on it all day long. This summer, for our patrons’ added enjoyment, we’re planning to bring live acoustic entertainment to the patio – an unobtrusive accompaniment to the great food, great views and great times.”

It’s little wonder that in 2009, Air Canada’s enRoute Magazine included the Iron Goat among its ‘Top 25’ in Canada: “Boasting one of the best views of the Rockies, this pub’s patio provides a nice escape from urban racket.”

PS – In case you’re wondering how the Iron Goat got its name: in 1943, Canmore Mines Ltd. bought a train engine that was built in 1905 for the CPR. Affectionately called ‘The Iron Goat’, it hauled coal until it was finally retired to Calgary’s Heritage Park in 1963. When you visit the Iron Goat Pub & Grill, keep your eyes peeled for its many tributes to Canmore’s railway heritage…starting with the unique handrails along the steps leading up to the door, the Canmore Mine Coal Cart and the real rails embedded in the front pathway!

The Iron Goat is located at 703 Benchlands Trail. Reservations: 403.609.0222
